A Peel Regional Police officer has been docked 15 days’ pay after leaving her loaded gun in a change room inside a clothing store at Mississauga’s — and Ontario’s — biggest shopping centre.

Const. Zahra Yusufzay was working as a plainclothes officer at Square One Shopping Centre on Dec. 16, 2024 when, on her lunch break, she tried on a pair of pants inside the Mango clothing store, an agreed statement of facts as part of a recent settlement pact reads.

While in the change room, the constable received a phone call from a fellow officer who asked her to do a translation by phone, the narrative of the statement, as provided by the Ontario Police Arbitration and Adjudication Commission, continues.

“Const. Yusufzay left the store to do the translation in her parked car, inadvertently leaving behind her police-issued use of force equipment, including a loaded firearm, in the change room,” the agreed statement of facts further reads.

The gun, in addition to an extra loaded magazine and handcuffs, was discovered a short time later by store staff, who quickly alerted mall security.

Peel Regional Police were then contacted by Square One security and subsequently secured the officer’s gun and other equipment.

According to the statement, the constable realized she had left her gun in the store and returned to find a Peel police supervisor in possession of her weapon, magazine and handcuffs.

The supervisor returned the equipment to Yusufzay, who “was very apologetic.”

The Peel constable was arrested three months later, in March 2025, and charged with unsafe storage of a firearm.

“Const. Yusufzay accepted responsibility and admitted the allegation,” the settlement agreement, reached on June 19, 2026 between Peel Regional Police and the constable, noted.

The recent agreement also pointed out that Yusufzay was said to have committed misconduct and would be penalized 15 days’ wages.
