New fraud allegations have the Law Society of Ontario seeking the suspension of lawyer Raj Grewal – a former Liberal Brampton Member of Parliament who was cleared of charges linked to gambling debts.
Earlier this month, the governing body responsible for the regulation of lawyers and paralegals in Ontario said it is investigating possible “misappropriated and/or misapplied trust monies” by Grewal. The law society says the former MP “may have knowingly participated in, facilitated or otherwise failed to prevent dishonesty, fraud, crime or illegal conduct.”
In a notice posted on July 10, the law society says it is seeking his suspension or restriction, and that there are “reasonable grounds…to believe that there is a significant risk of harm to members of the public and/or to the public interest.”
Grewal founded the Mississauga-based law firm RSG Law, and the law society also suspended lawyer Davinder Singh Khattra from the company earlier this month over similar allegations.

The former Brampton politician is reportedly facing multiple lawsuits. One case that alleged some of the proceeds of what turned were three fake cheques totalling over $5 million were placed in the trust account of RSG Law. The lawsuit did not name Grewal personally and was settled out of court, according to the National Post.
The Law Society of Ontario has set a hearing date of Aug. 14. Multiple requests for comment from Grewal’s lawyers were not returned by publication.
Grewal was the MP for Brampton East from 2015 to 2019, and stepped down in 2018 over allegations he used his position to solicit millions of dollars in loans to help pay off gambling debts. The former MP left the Liberal caucus in 2018 after his gambling issues were made public.
In 2020, the RCMP charged him with four counts of breach of trust and one count of fraud over $5,000, but he only stood trial for two breach of trust charges. The court heard that two Brampton-area businessmen who each provided a $200,000 loan to Grewal also attended events during Trudeau’s trip to India in 2018.
He was acquitted on two breach of trust charges after the Crown suggested Grewal offered help with visas or special access to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in exchange for financial help from friends and businesspeople in his riding. Grewal later filed a lawsuit seeking damages from the RCMP and the Ontario attorney general.
