4 arrested in investigation into under-construction Abbotsford drug lab

Four people were arrested in three separate searches stemming from an investigation by B.C.’s anti-gang police into an under-construction drug lab in rural Abbotsford.

Police searched three properties – the lab in Abbotsford and residences in Surrey and Enderby – on May 21 leading to the seizure of firearms, explosives and drugs, Sgt. Sarbjit K. Sangha told media during a Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit news conference in Surrey on Wednesday (July 29). The lab was on a rural, rental property in Abbotsford.

During the searches, four people were arrested: one in Abbotsford, one in Surrey and two in Enderby. For the Enderby arrests, one suspect is a resident of Enderby while the other is from Kelowna.

They have been released pending further investigation, Sangha said.

No charges have yet been laid.

Sangha said that the large-scale clandestine synthetic drug lab was still under construction, but if it had been completed “it would have been capable of producing a variety of drugs, including fentanyl, methamphetamine, MDMA, and GHB.”

She wouldn’t comment on the potential market value of the drugs.

“We never like to talk about the market value of the drugs because we do not want to glamorize that it is profitable. So we are going to focus on the what it could have caused in our community.”

During the searches, police seized the following firearms and explosives:

• 44 firearms, including privately made firearms and prohibited firearms

• Prohibited devices, including 11 suppressors and a number of over-capacity cartridge magazines

• Ammunition

• 65 tubes of emulsion explosives

Sangha said commercial explosives are strictly regulated in Canada and are only available to authorized and licensed commercial blasting companies working under those licences or police explosive technicians performing office duties.

“It is illegal for the general public to just go buy explosives, and these were commercial-grade explosives that are only used by mining companies or construction companies,” she said.

For drug production and trafficking, police seized the following:

• Approximately two kilograms of fentanyl

• Approximately two kilograms of methamphetamine

• Approximately 64 litres of GHB

• Cocaine, crack cocaine, heroin, MDMA, oxycodone, benzodiazepines, psilocybin, cannabis products and other controlled substances

• Drug precursors, packaging materials and trafficking ledgers

• 315 cannabis plants

In the searches, police also seized other evidence including:

• Approximately $4,000 in Canadian cash

• Precious metals, including four gold bars, one gold coin, 32 silver bars and 74 silver coins of varying weights

• A stolen Chevrolet Silverade Trail Boss

• Five vehicles and a motorcycle

• Multiple electronic devices
