A severe thunderstorm rolled through Winnipeg and south of the city late Wednesday into Thursday morning, causing hundreds of power outages.
Manitoba Hydro reported just under 700 individual power outages across Southern Manitoba as of midnight. Over 500 of those are in the Winnipeg area, including Heritage Park, Charleswood, and all along West Portage Ave. This includes the major intersection of Portage and Moray.
Along with intense wind gusts from the thunderstorm, the system produced heavy lightning and rain.
Alongside the power outages, including downtown Winnipeg and in the St. Vital area, there were reports of damage to trees.
While Winnipeg got hit hard with the wind, the system moved south after hitting the city, with stronger wind gusts reported and more power outages.
Manitoba Hydro has tips for people, encouraging them to prepare in advance for a power outage. This includes having flashlights and candles, along with enough water and non-perishable food for everyone in the house.
