A 51-year-old man is in hospital after being stabbed while attempting to help a woman who appeared to be overdosing.

Winnipeg police say that shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday, the victim stopped to help a woman near Jubilee Avenue and Osborne Street when a man known to the woman attacked the victim and stabbed him in the upper body.

Victim transported to hospital

Paramedics arrived at the scene and found the victim with serious injuries. He was taken to hospital in unstable condition. The woman was also transported to hospital for medical treatment.

Suspect arrested with help from Canine Unit

Winnipeg police were alerted to the incident, and just before 11 p.m., officers, with help from the Canine Unit, located the suspect in the 400 block of Brandon Avenue. He attempted to flee on foot, but was quickly stopped, and two knives were located and seized as evidence.

A 31-year-old man is facing charges of assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon.

He remains in custody.
