A Mississauga street renaming was approved to recognize a local company.
The street, currently named Yeadon Place, is located in a new development at the corner of Cawthra Road and Atwater Avenue, and the proposed name change is administrative only—no physical signage will require updating, according to a city report. There are no residents on the road yet.
Ward 1 Councillor Stephen Dasko brought the recommendation forward to change the name from Yeadon Place to Morguard Boulevard in June.
Morguard Corporation is a Canadian real estate company based and founded in Mississauga. It employs 464 people across the city and has a strong track record of giving back to the community through charitable, environmental, and sustainability initiatives, according to a staff report to the July 21 Heritage Advisory Committee.
“This is a family-run business, essentially, that has been in place for a long period of time, and this is just something that is going to recognize them in the community,” said Dasko at the meeting.
Morguard Corporation broke ground on the new development, which includes three residential towers, at Cawthra Road and Atwater Avenue, in October 2024.
Heritage Advisory Committee chair Brad Butt said there is a lot of precedent to name streets after developers or the family who built a subdivision.
“We’ve done that because we want to recognize the contributions that companies and individuals have made to the city,” Butt said.
The original name, Yeadon, appears to have come from the Cawthra family, committee member Lucy Zita said. One of the original British settlers to the area, Joseph Cawthra, arrived in Canada from Yeadon, Yorkshire, England in 1802.
“It made sense to me that they would use that (Yeadon) since it’s along Cawthra Road,” Zita said. “But I understand you want to honour the Morguard family.”
The staff report noted that the proposed name “meets most of the criteria; however, as Morguard is a mature and long-standing corporation and landowner within the city, it should be noted that the corporation has been involved in over 2,000 court cases.”
“Staff carried out a random sampling of over 100 records for review and have determined that the cases sampled involved standard business and do not reflect any unexpected or harmful cases,” the report notes. “It is noted that the review was not exhaustive.”
Street renaming requests are now vetted through the Heritage Advisory Committee before receiving final approval at council.
The committee voted in favour of the renaming.
