NASCAR team Legacy Motor Club on Thursday is revealing several more of the celebrity investors it’s bringing into the fold. In March, country music singer Darius Rucker was the first to reveal that he had become an investor without disclosing the size of his equity stake. Team co-owner Jimmie Johnson then told SBJ at the Indy 500 that he had lined up 27 investors, and a second was announced in June with Food Network star Guy Fieri. Legacy is now revealing nine more Thursday: Phillies 1B Bryce Harper, former MLBer Chase Utley, surfer Kelly Slater, former tennis player Andy Roddick, IndyCar luminaries Scott Dixon, Dario Franchitti and Tony Kanaan, private equity exec Sam Byrne and entrepreneur Jen Rubio.
With 11 names announced, that would suggest there are 16 others who have yet to be revealed. Legacy said the known names are “joined by accomplished leaders across investment, hospitality, consumer brands, innovation, media and global enterprise.” In a press release seen by SBJ, Johnson wrote: “This is not a traditional ownership group. It is a collection of people who understand competition, leadership, innovation, storytelling, and how enduring organizations are built. They come from different worlds but share a common belief: that Legacy can become something fundamentally different within motorsports and culture.” The other owner of Legacy is Knighthead Capital Management.
