For Jonathan Peralta Jr., losing his teeth at 25 wasn’t just a dental diagnosis. It changed the way he walked into his classroom, smiled at the people he loved and even saw himself in the mirror.
After developing a severe genetic case of periodontal disease that left his teeth beyond saving, the high school English and special education teacher found himself navigating adulthood while quietly carrying a fear that followed him everywhere.
“As my teeth became looser, the emotional impact was much harder than I ever expected,” he tells PEOPLE. “I became incredibly self-conscious about smiling, talking and even being close to other people.”

Teaching became one of the hardest parts of his day. Standing in front of students, Jonathan constantly wondered whether they noticed the changes happening to his smile before he was ready to talk about them.
“As a teacher, I spend every day speaking in front of students, so having something so visible happen to my teeth was devastating,” he says. “My confidence completely disappeared.” He found himself keeping his distance from students because he feared they would notice and talk about it behind his back.

The anxiety followed him outside the classroom, too. “I even became hesitant to kiss my fiancée or have conversations face-to-face because I was so worried about my breath or people noticing my teeth,” Jonathan says.
At the same time, he was trying to build a future that suddenly felt uncertain. Newly beginning his teaching career and planning a life with his fiancée, Jonathan says the endless specialist appointments, conflicting treatment recommendations and dramatically different price estimates only added to the emotional weight he was already carrying.
“It felt like everything I’d worked toward was suddenly falling apart,” he says. “It was the first major challenge in my life that I truly felt I had to navigate as an adult, but having the support of my fiancée and my family made all the difference.”
Eventually, Jonathan made the difficult decision to move forward with full-mouth implant-supported teeth after learning his natural teeth could no longer be saved. The process required multiple consultations, surgery and months of recovery as he adjusted to an entirely new reality.

Today, he’s able to smile, eat and speak without the constant anxiety that once defined his daily life, something he says has given him a renewed sense of confidence. Looking back, he says the experience taught him that vulnerability can be just as powerful as resilience.
“I almost kept my story to myself because I was embarrassed, but opening up ended up helping thousands of people recognize symptoms, schedule appointments, and feel less alone,” Jonathan tells PEOPLE.
“If you’re going through something similar, your story might give someone else the courage to seek help too,” he adds.
