Four people were arrested after a pair of police officers were assaulted and injured while on the job in the city’s Villeray neighbourhood earlier this week, Montreal police said Friday.

The incident occurred shortly before 2 a.m. Monday when two patrolling officers saw two men allegedly violating the Highway Safety Code on Mistral St., near Christophe-Colomb Ave.

“During the intervention, the individuals allegedly resisted arrest and committed acts that could constitute criminal offences against peace officers,” police said in a statement Friday.

Two men, who are both 25 years old, were arrested and face charges of obstructing a police officer and assaulting a police officer. One of them was also charged with taking or attempting to take a weapon from a police officer.

“The two men remained in custody following the police intervention and appeared in court on July 27,” police said.

Two women, 25 and 23, were also arrested. Police said they were both released, but one was given a summons to appear and the other with a notice to appear.

“They could face charges of obstructing a peace officer and assaulting a peace officer,” police said.

The two women police officers sustained minor injuries during the intervention, according to police. They did not require hospitalization.

“The SPVM strongly condemns all violence against its officers. It recognizes the challenges they face daily in carrying out their mission and their commitment to making Montreal a safe city. The SPVM prioritizes their safety, while remaining fully committed to ensuring public safety,” police said in its statement, adding it will follow up on the incident.

Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette also condemned the incident Friday, calling it “unacceptable.”

“This heinous act adds to other recent episodes of intimidation, insults, and violence against our police officers, particularly our female officers,” she wrote Friday in a post on X.

“No form of violence against the men and women who ensure our safety should be tolerated.”
