If you’re planning to spend part of the Civic Holiday long weekend outdoors, you may want to keep an umbrella close by on Sunday, as rain and possible thunderstorms are expected across southern Ontario, putting a damper on everything from patio outings and Caribana festivals to trips to the beach.

Early risers can still catch Sunday’s 6:03 a.m. sunrise before rain becomes more widespread. Those heading outdoors should keep an umbrella close by, as 15 to 25 millimetres of rain is expected in many areas, along with the possibility of thunderstorms.

Mississauga, Brampton and Durham are forecast to see rain with a risk of thunderstorms, while daytime highs rise to 23 C in Mississauga and Brampton and 22 C in Durham. Despite the cooler temperatures, humidex values will make it feel like 28 C in Mississauga and Brampton and 29 C in Durham.

Halton and Hamilton will also experience periods of rain with the risk of thunderstorms. Highs will reach 21 C in Halton and 22 C in Hamilton, with humidex values making it feel closer to 29 C in Halton and 28 in Hamilton.

The UV index will be 3, or moderate, across Mississauga, Brampton, Halton and Durham, and 2, or low, in Hamilton.

Environment Canada recommends taking precautions when the UV index reaches 3 or higher, including wearing sunscreen, sunglasses and protective clothing, and limiting prolonged sun exposure during peak afternoon hours.

Sunset begins at 8:39 p.m.

Cloudy skies will linger Sunday evening, with a 60 per cent chance of showers continuing across Mississauga, Brampton, Halton, Hamilton and Durham.

There remains a risk of thunderstorms early in the evening before conditions gradually settle overnight.

Overnight lows will fall to 16 C across Mississauga, Brampton, Halton and Hamilton, and 17 C in Durham.
