Residents across a large stretch of southern Ontario should prepare for periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms today, with some areas at risk of receiving more than 50 mm of rainfall, raising the potential for localized flooding and hazardous driving conditions.
Environment and Climate Change Canada says periods of rain with embedded thunderstorms are expected from this morning through this evening. While not every community will see the heaviest rain, areas that experience multiple thunderstorms could receive more than 50 mm of rain.
The weather alert covers a broad section of southern Ontario, including Clarington, Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill, Milton, Oakville, Burlington, Hamilton and surrounding communities.
Meteorologists warn that the heaviest downpours could develop in localized areas where thunderstorms repeatedly move over the same locations. If conditions worsen, rainfall warnings could be issued for affected regions.
Drivers should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions throughout the day. Heavy rain can cause water to pool on roads, particularly in low-lying areas, while visibility may be suddenly reduced during intense downpours.
Motorists are encouraged to slow down, leave extra distance between vehicles and avoid driving through flooded roadways, as water depths can be difficult to judge.
Residents are also advised to monitor the latest forecasts and weather alerts, especially if they have outdoor plans or will be travelling across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area or eastern portions of the region later today.
