Ryan Reynolds-owned Wrexham is looking to wrap up its pre-season tour of the United States with just one more win when it faces Premier League side Sunderland in Chester, Pennsylvania on Sunday. The Dragons’ unbeaten run through pre-season recently ended after a 1-0 loss to Liverpool in New York, but Phil Parkinson hopes to inspire just one more win against top-flight opposition before the journey home.
Wrexham entered that clash at Yankee Stadium having already beaten both Manchester United and Leeds United during their summer travels. That was until Liverpool youngster Rio Ngumoha came up with the only goal of the game in their clash at one of the most iconic sporting venues in the country.
Sunderland, meanwhile, had already lost 4-2 to Liverpool in Nashville one week ago before succumbing 1-0 to Leeds United in a disappointing follow-up. Regis Le Bris’ side could really do with developing some momentum ahead of this season as they prepare to compete in the Europa League following a surprise seventh-place finish in England’s top flight last term.
Wednesday’s win came too soon for new Wrexham signing Danny Imray to make his debut, but the wing-back could expect to be involved in some capacity at Subaru Park. Sunderland has similarly acquired a right-back as its only signing of the summer thus far, with Belgium’s Thomas Meunier still awaiting his own debut after joining from Lille on a free transfer.
