August is almost here, and the CFL standings are starting to sort themselves out. Edmonton’s wild 36-34 win over Saskatchewan in Week 8 pushed the Elks to 6-1 and into a share of first overall with Montreal, while BC and Ottawa are sliding in the opposite direction. Four games are on tap for Week 9, and three of them feature a team looking to snap a losing skid against an opponent trying to keep its momentum rolling.
We compared lines across four regulated sportsbooks to find the best CFL betting value for Week 9, then broke down each matchup with a score prediction. New to wagering on Canadian football? RG.org’s sports betting strategy guide is a good place to start before locking in a bet.
CFL Week 9 Odds Comparison
Odds are moneyline prices sourced from the listed sportsbooks and are subject to change. Totals sit at roughly 53.5-54.5 (BC-Winnipeg), 60.5-61.5 (Montreal-Ottawa and Calgary-Hamilton) and 59.5-60.5 (Saskatchewan-Edmonton).
BC Lions at Winnipeg Blue Bombers
Thursday, July 30 — 8:30 p.m. ET — TSN/RDS/CFL+
The Lions have dropped to 1-5 and are about to hand the ball to their third quarterback of the season. With Nathan Rourke still out with a shoulder injury and Chase Brice benched, TSN’s Farhan Lalji reports Kaidon Salter is expected to make his first CFL start. The former Colorado starter flashed some ability in relief against Toronto, but he’ll do it on a short week at Princess Auto Stadium, one of the loudest buildings in the league.
Winnipeg isn’t exactly rolling either. Dru Brown has struggled behind centre in place of the injured Zach Collaros, throwing four interceptions in last week’s loss, and the offensive line has had its own issues. Still, running back Brady Oliveira became just the fifth Canadian in CFL history to reach 6,000 career rushing yards last week, and the Bombers’ defence and home-field edge should be enough against a rookie quarterback making his debut on the road.
Pick: Winnipeg to win, though the -7.5 spread is a tougher lean given Salter’s unknown ceiling. The moneyline is the safer route here.
Score prediction: Winnipeg 27, BC 17
Montreal Alouettes at Ottawa Redblacks
Friday, July 31 — 7:30 p.m. ET — TSN/RDS/CBSSN/CFL+
Montreal (6-1) has won four straight and boasts the CFL’s most efficient passer in Davis Alexander, who leads the league with 2,368 yards through the air and just one interception against 11 touchdowns. Running back Travis Theis added another strong outing last week, and this looks like a trap game on paper: Montreal is on a short week and already looking ahead to a Week 10 showdown with Edmonton.
Ottawa, at 0-6, is coming off its second bye of the season and still searching for its first win. The Redblacks made a minor roster tweak this week, adding tight end Jevoni Robinson in a trade with Hamilton, but a talent gap remains between these two rosters. Montreal nearly let this one slip a few weeks ago, so complacency is a real risk, but the Als’ overall talent advantage should be too much for Ottawa to overcome twice in one season.
Pick: Montreal covers, but keep stake sizes modest given the letdown-spot potential.
Score prediction: Montreal 31, Ottawa 16
Calgary Stampeders at Hamilton Tiger-Cats
Saturday, Aug. 1 — 3:00 p.m. ET — TSN/CTV/CFL+
Both teams sit at 3-4, and both have lost to the exact same three opponents (Saskatchewan, Winnipeg and Montreal), yet Calgary looks like the sharper team right now. Quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. set a new CFL record with 21 consecutive touchdown passes without an interception, and running back Tyreik McAllister became the first player in league history to score three different types of touchdowns in a single half last week against Winnipeg.
Hamilton hung tough with Montreal into the fourth quarter behind Tre Ford, whose dual-threat ability gives the Tiger-Cats a different look than most CFL offences, and Hamilton’s defence has been stout for most of the season. But limiting Adams Jr. and McAllister together is a tall order, and Calgary’s offensive firepower gives it the edge on the road.
Pick: Calgary to win and cover -4.5.
Score prediction: Calgary 34, Hamilton 24
Saskatchewan Roughriders at Edmonton Elks
Saturday, Aug. 1 — 7:00 p.m. ET — TSN/CBSSN/CFL+
This is the rematch nobody saw coming a month ago. Last week’s “Showdown in Saskatchewan” delivered a 36-34 classic, with Edmonton’s Vincent Blanchard drilling a 57-yard, game-winning field goal as time expired and Cody Fajardo throwing for a career-best 510 yards and four touchdowns — the most passing yards in a single CFL game since Ricky Ray’s 506 in 2017. Trevor Harris was nearly as good for Saskatchewan, throwing for 386 yards and four touchdowns in the loss.
Both defences will want a much tighter performance this time, and it’s hard to imagine another 600-yard shootout two weeks running. Edmonton is now tied atop the league standings with Montreal and gets a return date at Commonwealth Stadium, but Saskatchewan already has the blueprint after nearly winning the first meeting. Several CFL.ca writers, along with Jamie Nye’s weekly predictor, are siding with the Roughriders to even the season series.
Pick: Saskatchewan (+0.5/+1), with the moneyline offering plus value at some books.
Score prediction: Saskatchewan 27, Edmonton 24
