A heated rivalry between the Brampton Honey Badgers and the Scarborough Shooting Stars boiled over Monday night (Aug. 3) when an on-court fight broke out during the teams’ final regular-season game just days before the Canadian Elite Basketball League playoffs.
The brawl, which was captured on video, erupted with less than a minute remaining in the second quarter at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre with Scarborough leading Brampton 48-44.
The altercation appeared to begin between Brampton’s Tegra Izay and Scarborough’s Charles Bediako before quickly escalating as players from both benches became involved. Video from the game shows punches being thrown as teammates and coaching staff rushed onto the court in an attempt to separate those involved.
The Canadian Elite Basketball League has not yet announced any disciplinary action. League officials are reviewing video of the incident, and suspensions could be handed down before the postseason begins later this week.
The fight overshadowed what was otherwise a historic night for the defending champion Shooting Stars, who defeated Brampton 91-77 to finish the regular season with a league-record 20 victories.
While the loss ended the Honey Badgers’ regular season, it did little to dampen what has already been one of the franchise’s most successful campaigns in years.
After finishing at the bottom of the CEBL standings in each of the past two seasons, Brampton secured a playoff berth with an 11-11 record, ending a three-year postseason drought. The turnaround comes during a landmark year for the organization, highlighted by billionaire entrepreneur and television personality Mark Cuban joining the team’s ownership group.
Cuban became part of the Honey Badgers ownership earlier this year through his business relationship with majority owner Leonard Asper and CEO Al Whitley, a longtime former executive with the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks. Cuban also made a visit to Brampton in June to watch the team in action, saying Canada’s growing basketball profile made the investment an attractive opportunity.
The Honey Badgers will now turn their attention to the playoffs, where they are scheduled to host the Ottawa BlackJacks in an Eastern Conference quarterfinal matchup on Thursday, Aug. 6, at the CAA Centre in Brampton.
Whether Brampton will have its full roster available remains to be seen as the league continues its review of Monday night’s brawl. Any suspensions announced by the CEBL could have an immediate impact on the Honey Badgers’ playoff hopes.
