Montreal police say arson investigators will examine a vehicle fire that damaged the exterior of a mosque, along with another building, in the Cote-des-Neiges neighbourhood early Friday morning.
The Montreal fire department had said they were investigating the blaze over the weekend, but did not immediately transfer the case to police.
On Tuesday, Montreal police said the probe was transferred to their arson unit, following new developments in the case.
On July 31, around 3:15 a.m., a 911 call was made to report a vehicle on fire in the alley of Courtrai Avenue near Lavoie Street.
When police arrived, the fire was under control but it had spread to the two buildings on either side of the alley, damaging them. No spread inside either building was observed.
Fire officials said the blaze did not reach the interior of the building that houses the mosque, but it was closed briefly due to the smell of smoke.
Mosque officials said in a Facebook post that prayers were set to resume Tuesday.
The cause of the fire remains unknown and the investigation is ongoing.
