RCMP confirm 1 person died in mid-air plane crash in Chilliwack

One person has died following a mid-air plane crash in Chilliwack, RCMP have confirmed.
Two Cessna 172 aircraft collided in the air around 5:15 p.m. on Monday (Aug. 3) near Industrial Access Road by Skway and Wolfe roads.
One plane, which had only the pilot on-board, went down and into a man-made pond.
Chilliwack RCMP, the Lower Mainland District Police Dog Services (LMD IPDS), Chilliwack Fire Department and Chilliwack Search and Rescue (SAR) attended the scene and began working to locate the area where one of the planes went down, RCMP stated in a press release the next day.
Fire crews reported that the aircraft was completely submerged when they arrived. An air ambulance was called to the scene, but was later cancelled.
“The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team (URT) attended the scene and located one male deceased victim and the plane. Recovery efforts are currently underway,” Staff Sgt. Kris Clark, senior media relations officer with RCMP E Division wrote in the release.
The other plane, carrying two people, was damaged and made an emergency landing at the Chilliwack Airport. The occupants did not sustain injuries.
A team of investigators from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) was deployed to the area. Investigators were scheduled to arrive the following afternoon (Aug. 4) and will gather information and assess the incident, according to a TSB deployment notice.
Chilliwack RCMP General Investigation Services Team (GIST) is currently supporting TSB with their ongoing investigation. This multi-agency investigation is working to understand the circumstances that led to the collision.
