Several players including members of the Brampton Honey Badgers have been suspended and fined ahead of the Canadian Elite Basketball League playoffs following an on-court brawl.
The fracas erupted with less than a minute remaining in the second quarter of the Honey Badger’s final regular season game against the Scarborough Shooting Stars on Monday.
Scarborough was leading Brampton 48-44 when the fight started, and appeared to begin between the Honey Badgers’ Tegra Izay and the Shooting Stars’ Charles Bediako before quickly escalating as players from both benches became involved.
Video from the game which has since been removed online shows punches being thrown as teammates and coaching staff rushed onto the court in an attempt to separate those involved. Toronto hip-hop star Drake was in the crowd watching the action during Monday’s game.
On Wednesday, the CEBL announced suspensions and fines against six players, including two from Brampton.
From the Honey Badgers, Roddy Peters Jr. and Tegra Izay have each been fined. Peters will serve a two-game suspension while Izay was handed a one-game suspension.
Myles Powel, Frank Mitchell, Javan Johnson and Terquavion Smith were fined on the Shooting Stars’ side of the brawl. Johnson and Mitchell will serve one-game suspensions, while Smith will sit out for two games.
“All disciplinary decisions are effective immediately,” the league said when announcing the fines and suspensions on Wednesday.
The amount of the fines have not been disclosed.
The suspensions mean the Honey Badgers will be without Peters and Izay when the post-season starts. Brampton is scheduled to host the Ottawa BlackJacks in an Eastern Conference quarterfinal matchup at the CAA Centre on Thursday.
After finishing at the bottom of the CEBL standings in each of the past two seasons, Brampton secured a playoff berth with an 11-11 record in the 2026 regular season ending a three-year postseason drought.
They won the CEBL championship in 2024.
The team’s turnaround comes during a landmark season, which has seen billionaire entrepreneur and television personality Mark Cuban joining the team’s ownership group.
Cuban became part owner of the Honey Badgers earlier this year through his business relationship with majority owner Leonard Asper and CEO Al Whitley, a longtime former executive with the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks.
He made one visit to Brampton to watch the team in action, saying Canada’s growing basketball profile made the investment an attractive opportunity.
