Navneet Kaur – a Toronto woman allegedly slain by a Brampton man after rejecting his marriage proposals – is being remembered for her compassion “and infectious smile.”
Kaur, 26, was shot and killed on the morning of July 24 while walking near her home on Humberwood Boulevard, near Rexdale Boulevard in northwest Toronto.
Sharnjeet Singh, a 37-year-old Brampton man, has since been arrested by the OPP and charged with first-degree murder and failing to comply with a previous court-ordered undertaking.
Kaur and her alleged killer knew each other but were never romantically involved, according to a source connected to the family. Singh was pursuing Kaur, and began harassing her when he rejected her advances, the source said.
A fundraiser has been started to support Kaur’s family back in India by her friend Uneet Mittal, who says Kaur “was a kind, caring, and compassionate soul who touched countless lives with her warmth, generosity, and infectious smile.”

“Although we were not related by blood, we shared a bond of love, trust, and family,” Mittal wrote on a GoFundMe page dedicated to Kaur. “Navneet was a cherished part of my life, and her tragic and untimely passing has left me, along with everyone who knew her, devastated.”
He says Kaur was his “chosen” family, and that “she always went out of her way to help others and made everyone around her feel valued and loved.”
“Her loss has created an immeasurable void in the hearts of her family and friends,” Mittal says.
The fundraiser has collected more than $15,000 worth of donation of a $22,000 goal, with the money being used to arrange the transportation of Navneet’s body from Canada to India, cover funeral costs and help the family with expenses.
According to several media reports, Singh was charged in July 2025 with criminal harassment and assault involving Kaur. He was released on an undertaking that included a condition prohibiting any contact with her. He is awaiting trial on those charges, which have not been proven in court.
Singh’s bail was revoked following his arrest in the homicide investigation, and he remains in custody with a court appearance scheduled for July 31.
The Toronto Police Service say Kaur and a man had a brief interaction shortly before the shooting at 7:23 a.m. on July 24.
Reports say the woman was walking alone when she was approached by a man from behind. He called out to her; a brief conversation ensued; then a gun was pulled, and a single shot was fired.
