A man is dead after being shot early Thursday in Mississauga by Toronto Police officers investigating a stolen Mercedes.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit says the incident occurred shortly before 12:30 a.m. after officers located a vehicle that had been reported stolen in Toronto the day before.
The vehicle was tracked to Delfi Rd., in the area of The Collegeway and Winston Churchill Blvd., and, according to the SIU, “there was an interaction, and three unmarked police vehicles became involved in a collision with the Mercedes, which was occupied by four people.”

SIU spokesperson Monica Hudon told reporters at the scene that the officer who fired “was standing outside on the roadway and then shot into the Mercedes vehicle through the driver’s side.”
The driver, whose age was not released, died at the scene, while the three others who were in the Mercedes were taken into custody. Hudon said the identification of the driver will be released upon notification of the family.

Peel Regional Police said another male was taken to hospital with minor injuries, and a Toronto Police officer was also “transported to hospital with minor injuries as a result of a collision.”
Hudon said the officer who was struck by the vehicle was not the officer who fired at least one shot into the car.
Two firearms located in vicinity of Mercedes
In total, five unmarked Toronto Police cars were involved in the chase.
Hudon said the SIU has “four investigators, three forensic investigators and a collision reconstructionist who are assigned to the case (and) will determine exactly what transpired leading up to the shooting and after.”
There was no indication of an exchange of gunfire, but two firearms were located in the vicinity of the Mercedes.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is called in to investigate the conduct of police in cases involving death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
