In a concerning case of rental fraud, eight individuals in Mississauga have reportedly lost over $30,000. Peel Regional Police revealed that suspects from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and Surrey, British Columbia, orchestrated a scam by advertising rental properties on social media early last year. Prospective tenants were shown an apartment, presumably through a short-term rental platform, and met with individuals posing as current tenants.
After signing online agreements, victims sent money via e-transfer to secure these units. However, upon attempting to move in, they discovered the apartments were unavailable, and the supposed landlord was unreachable. Jashanpreet Sidhu, 23, and Priyanshu Goel, 24, are wanted on charges of fraud over $5,000, with Sidhu also facing charges for possession of property obtained by crime. Police have urged the public to exercise caution, emphasizing the importance of verifying rental listings and landlords’ identities.
