A Mississauga man is among three people facing firearms-related charges following a police investigation that ended with a fatal officer-involved shooting in Mississauga earlier this week.
Toronto police announced Thursday that 19-year-old Kahiem Bailey-Whitfield of Mississauga, 23-year-old Naquon Laidley of Toronto, and a 17-year-old female youth have been charged following the investigation.
The charges stem from an incident that began in Toronto and ended in Mississauga near The Collegeway and Winston Churchill Boulevard.
According to Toronto police, officers received a report of a person with a gun near The Esplanade and Lower Jarvis Street in Toronto on Aug. 5 at about 5:50 p.m.
Police said officers from 51 Division identified a suspect and vehicle, and plainclothes officers tracked the vehicle from Toronto to Mississauga.
Police allege that when officers attempted to stop the vehicle in the area of The Collegeway and Winston Churchill Boulevard, the driver attempted to flee and struck a plainclothes officer.
The events that followed, including the police shooting that left one man dead, are being investigated by Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU).
Bailey-Whitfield faces multiple firearms charges, including two counts each of possessing a restricted or prohibited firearm without a licence and registration certificate, occupying a motor vehicle with a firearm, possessing a loaded regulated firearm, and possessing a prohibited or restricted weapon knowing there was no authority to do so.
Laidley faces the same firearms-related charges, as well as a charge of failing to comply with probation. In September of 2023, a person with the same name was charged with two counts of attempted murder in Timmins. The outcome of that case is not known.
The youth has also been charged with several firearms offences and probation-related charges. Her identity cannot be released under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Police said the three accused were scheduled to appear in court Thursday morning.
The SIU continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, which resulted in the death of one man and involved a Toronto police officer discharging a firearm.
The SIU has not released the identity of the man who died.
