Off-road vehicle use for recreation is now banned across large parts of B.C. as the province battles an active wildfire season.
The prohibition took effect at noon Monday in the Kamloops and Southeast fire centres, as well as parts of the Cariboo and Coastal fire centres.
The temporary ban covers ATVs, motorcycles and off-road side-by-sides on Crown land and is aimed at preventing accidental wildfire ignitions and protecting the public and first responders.
The restriction does not apply to private land or national parks, or to emergency responders and agricultural, commercial or industrial users operating vehicles for work.
“Anyone found in contravention of a restricted activity prohibition may be issued a ticket for $1,150, required to pay an administrative penalty of $10,000, or, if convicted in court, fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced for up to one year in jail,” the province said in an media release.
The restrictions may be expanded or lifted as conditions change.
