Following our previous visit to Bo Lee Architects, we are keeping our Meet Your Next Employer series in New York City this week to explore the work of Practice for Architecture and Urbanism (PAU).
The firm describes itself as “a group of thinkers who build, utopian pragmatists whose dreams of impactful design have been forged in the white heat of hard-fought experience.” PAU has built a portfolio encompassing a wide variety of typologies from cultural and educational to housing and infrastructure.

In Brooklyn, PAU overhauled the Refinery at Domino office component at the 11-acre former Domino Sugar Factory site in Williamsburg. The new, 15-story glass commercial space was constructed inside the building’s old brick masonry shell, offering tenants 460,000 square feet of Class A office space enhanced by carefully inserted biophilic elements. A 12-foot gap left between the new and old structures provides space for Field Operations’s 17-count in-house arboretum.

The redevelopment of Penn Station aims to transform the station into a larger, more accessible hub serving over 600,000 daily commuters. Among the priorities are reorganizing circulation throughout the station, reducing congestion, and introducing expanded waiting areas, retail, and passenger amenities. The proposal includes a new grand entrance on 8th Avenue leading to a train hall, alongside the replacement of existing low-ceilinged corridors with larger concourses.

PAU is currently leading the multi-phase Niagara Falls Heritage Gateways project, intended to strengthen the connection between the city’s downtown and Niagara Falls State Park and Riverway Tree Walk. Four canopied gateway structures will be enacted as part of its design, offering tourists views of the nearby American Rapids and Goat Island and connected by a “network” of promenades and shaded open spaces. The initial phase calls for the redevelopment of Hydraulic Power Plaza and Niagara Gorge Gateway Park, followed by the construction of the Tree Walk, which includes a viewing platform to be placed at a wooded clearing and serving as a beacon for visitors between downtown and the Riverway.

PAU is currently overseeing an expansion of the I.M. Pei-designed Rock & Roll Hall of Fame museum in Cleveland. The initiative will add a triangular structure to Pei’s iconic original glass pyramid design, featuring a new entrance lobby, education center, offices, and a 6,000-square-foot multipurpose space that’s meant to increase its overall footprint by 33% while activating public space along a currently underutilized section of the city’s Lake Erie waterfront.
