Low fire behaviour remains, planned ignition cancelled at Quilpituk Creek wildfire

The Quilpituk Creek wildfire continued to display Rank 1 and 2 fire behaviour on Monday, Aug. 10, despite “unsettled” weather conditions throughout the Bradley Creek complex.
On Monday, BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) was forced to cancel a planned ignition along the west flank of the fire has been canceled due to unfavourable on-site conditions. The operation would’ve removed 100 hectares of unburnt fuel between the fire perimeter and established control lines. Instead, crews utilized direct attack operations and have been utilizing small-scale hand ignitions if required to remove unburnt pockets of fuel between the perimeter of the fire and established guard.
Structure protection crews have been remaining on scene around the clock to perform tactical patrols and maintain established systems. At the same time, heavy equipment crews have been working to complete control lines anchored to natural terrain features to fully enclose the fire perimeter.
As of Tuesday morning, Aug. 11, all evacuation orders and alerts remain in place. However, the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) is finalizing a re-entry plan to support a safe and coordinated return home.
Westside Road remains closed from Highway 97 in Vernon to Main Street for a 48.4 km stretch.
At the Bradley Creek wildfire complex, which covers both the Quilpituk Creek and Bradley Creek wildfires, there is currently an Incident Management Team, 129 firefighters, 11 helicopters, 40 pieces of heavy equipment, and 67 structure protection members.
The Quilpituk Creek wildfire is one of 101 active wildfires in B.C. It remains listed at 1,291.9 hectares.
