Police have closed traffic on part of a busy highway in Mississauga following a multi-vehicle crash on Tuesday.

The crash happened shortly before 5 p.m. in the westbound lanes of Highway 403 in Mississauga, the OPP Highway Safety Division says.

Police say two vehicles were initially involved in a collision in the westbound lanes of the highway. Both drivers had moved the vehicles to the right shoulder when a third vehicle collided with one of the vehicles carrying an adult driver and a child passenger.

Both were taken to hospital with critical injuries, police said in an update at 7:40 p.m.

A third person was taken to hospital with minor injuries while the driver of the third vehicle was not injured.

All westbound traffic has been stalled on Highway 403 between Mavis Road and Erin Mills Parkway, the OPP says. The closure is expected to last until around 10 p.m.

Photos from the scene captured on Ministry of Transportation traffic cameras show a long line of traffic backed up in the area.

“Please use alternate routes and expect traffic delays in the area,” the OPP says.
