City of Brampton says that a Brampton property owner has been convicted on seven charges following a fatal 2023 fire at 47 Jade Crescent that claimed the lives of a pregnant woman and her three-year-old daughter.
The fire was reported around 11 p.m. on June 2, 2026. Fire crews found one person outside the home suffering from fire-related injuries, while two others were rescued from inside. A pregnant woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and her three-year-old daughter died in hospital days later.
An investigation found the legal two-unit property had been converted into four units without required permits and failed to meet Building and Fire Code requirements, including those involving smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and fire separations.
The owner has been sentenced to 135 days in custody, $50,000 in fines plus $10,000 in victim surcharges, and two years of probation.
Brampton Fire and Emergency Services is reminding property owners and landlords to comply with Ontario’s Fire Code and ensure required safety measures are properly installed and maintained.
