The qualification process for the Life Time Grand Prix is ever evolving. For 2027, that looks like a step in a positive direction. Wild Card selection for the season will happen significantly earlier, concluding at Sea Otter in California instead of extending to Unbound.

That’s not the only change, though. Life Time’s bringing the series back to seven events but returning Rad Festival to the calendar. The endurance series is also going to start vetting who counts as a “pro” for its pro starts. Privateers beware.

Sea Otter is now a Wild Card spectacle weekend

One complaint about the Life Time’s move to a Wild Card system, where just 10 of the 25 series athletes prequalified, was that it put riders in a tight spot. You had to either bet qualifying and plan your entire season around a series you might not be part of or hedge your bets and wait to see if you qualify before planning the second half of your season. Which is a hard place to be in for privateer racers approaching sponsors.

For 2027, that system gets slightly better. Instead of that uncertainty extending all the way. to Unbound, which was the second of two qualifier events in 2025, Wild Card positions will be awarded during the Sea Otter Classic weekend in Monterrey, California.

It will still be one gravel and one mountain bike event. But both those races will happen at Sea Otter. Athlete’s looking to qualify will have to race Life Time Sea Otter Classic Gravel on Thursday and Life Time Sea Otter Classic Fuego XL on Saturday. Probably. Details on the qualification process are still secret, so it may be possible to only race one or the other event and still qualify. Maybe.

That’s still… late. Most athletes have to approach sponsors in the fall and winter before a season starts. But it’s better, I guess?

Prequalified spots will be given to the top 10 elite male and female riders from the 2026 season and the top male and female under-23 riders.

Rad Dirt Festival is back, fake pros are out

Life Time is also bringing the series back up to seven events. The Rad Dirt festival in Trinidad, Colorado will be the fifth event on the 2027 calendar.

“Following conversations with our athletes, it was clear The Rad remained a favorite because of the course and the kind of racing it creates,” said Kimo Seymour, President of Events and Media at Life Time. “As we looked at returning the Grand Prix to seven events, bringing The Rad back into the championship was a natural fit.”

As part of its effort to professionalize endurance gravel and xc racing in North America, Life Time will now be deciding who is a professional.

According to the announcement:

“Life Time will also introduce a new Pro category vetting process in September, through which riders will apply for access to race in the Pro field at Life Time events in 2027. Additional details on this process will be announced separately.”

Given that the GP is a series that, historically, put a heavy weight on social media presence, it will be interesting to see how, and by what standards, Life Time is going to determine who is suitably professional to race its series.
