Fire activity ‘predominantly limited’ at Quilpituk Creek wildfire

No visible open flame was observed at the Quilpituk Creek wildfire on Wednesday, Aug. 12, but weather concerns are on the horizon.
In its latest update, which came at 6:44 p.m. on Wednesday, BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) said the fire activity experienced throughout the day and expected to remain the same throughout the night was “predominantly limited to smouldering ground fire, with a slow rate of spread, white smoke, and no visible open flame observed.”
Crews continue to extinguish hot spots as they arise.
Along the southwest flank, crews established water delivery systems using hose lays to move water directly to the fire’s edge on Wednesday. This will allow crews on scene to continue aggressive mop-up and wet down the perimeter in areas inaccessible to engines.
BC Hydro’s work along Westside Road is ongoing as crews continue to reenergize powerlines and assess danger trees near infrastructure.
BCWS also stated that due to decreased fire activity, public updates will transition to one per day, unless conditions change or there are “significant developments.”
At this time, all evacuation orders and alerts remain in place; however, the EOC said on Wednesday that residents should start preparing to be ready to head home.
At the Bradley Creek wildfire complex, which covers both the Quilpituk Creek and Bradley Creek wildfires, there is currently an Incident Management Team, 113 firefighters, seven helicopters, 38 pieces of heavy equipment, and 25 structure protection members.
BCWS slightly decreased the size of the The Quilpituk Creek wildfire, which is now listed at 1,275.7 hectares, down from the previously reported 1,291.9 hectares in size. It remains listed as out of control. It is one of 109 active wildfires in the province.
