August 14 is one of the most significant dates in Formula 1 history, marking the death of Enzo Ferrari alongside championship glory, breakthrough victories and memorable milestones.
Ferrari died in Maranello at the age of 90. The man who founded Ferrari had become one of motorsport’s defining figures, building a racing operation that would become synonymous with Formula 1.
Ferrari remained in control of the team until his death. Just weeks later, Gerhard Berger led Michele Alboreto home in an emotional Ferrari one-two at Monza, the only Grand Prix of the dominant 1988 season in which neither McLaren finished on the podium.
Twenty-eight years earlier, Jack Brabham won the 1960 Portuguese Grand Prix for Cooper and secured his second consecutive Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship with two races remaining.
Bruce McLaren finished second to complete a Cooper one-two, while a young Jim Clark claimed third for Lotus. It was Clark’s first Formula 1 podium, while teammate John Surtees had earlier scored his maiden pole position.
The 1977 Austrian Grand Prix produced one of Formula 1’s great surprise results. Alan Jones started just 14th for Shadow but mastered difficult wet conditions to claim his first Grand Prix victory.
Jones delivers Shadow’s only F1 victory
Jones climbed through the field before inheriting the lead when James Hunt suffered an engine failure on Lap 44. He finished more than 20 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Niki Lauda, giving Shadow its only Formula 1 win.
Six years later at the same circuit, Alain Prost won for Renault ahead of René Arnoux and Nelson Piquet. The 1983 Austrian Grand Prix also delivered Ferrari’s 100th Formula 1 pole position, courtesy of Patrick Tambay.
On August 14, 1994, Michael Schumacher controlled the Hungarian Grand Prix from start to finish for Benetton. He beat Damon Hill by more than 20 seconds and extended his championship advantage to 31 points.
Behind them came Jos Verstappen, who secured his first Formula 1 podium just two weeks after escaping the dramatic Benetton pit fire at Hockenheim with minor burns.
August 14 also marks the birthdays of former F1 racers Leslie Marr and Jackie Oliver, completing a date packed with milestones spanning several generations of the sport.
