American Frances Tiafoe, the No. 17 seed, beat Italian Lorenzo Sonego 6-3, 6-4 on Monday night to reach the third round of the Cincinnati Open, closing out the men’s second round as the last match of the night, jumping on Sonego from the opening point in front of an energized home crowd. Tiafoe, ranked No. 20, will next face fellow American Learner Tien, the No. 16 seed.
It was Tiafoe’s 33rd win of the season and a promising early sign at the event where he was runner-up in 2024. Sonego, ranked No. 88, had beaten China’s Juncheng Shang 6-3, 6-3 to reach the second round.
