Motorists who use a major road in Mississauga’s east end will face some delays this week as part of the route has been shut down due to construction.

A Peel Region project to replace a storm sewer on a section of Dixie Road between Blundell Road and Caterpillar Road, south of Dundas Street East and north of The Queensway East, will close all southbound lanes to traffic starting today and continuing through Friday, officials said.

Mississauga Ward 1 Coun. Stephen Dasko said in an online notice to residents the closure on the main north-south road is in effect “night and day” this week from 80 metres south of Blundell Road to 180 metres north of Caterpillar Road.

He added “a through lane will be maintained for southbound traffic on Dixie Road.”

The project is one of multiple similar initiatives already underway or planned in Mississauga as the city’s aging infrastructure is either replaced or upgraded.

A short distance to the west of Dixie Road, residents in the Cooksville area of the city are being told they can expect partial park and trail closures in addition to construction noise and dust starting this summer as workers rehabilitate a “critical” piece of infrastructure.

Peel Region crews will be working on upgrading the Lower Cooksville Trunk Sewer, a “critical underground system” that carries wastewater from area homes and businesses to treatment facilities, Mississauga Ward 7 Coun. Dipika Damerla said in an earlier update to the community.

“Construction will begin in phases, with the first phase expected to start later this summer and continue into winter 2027,” the councillor said in early July, adding the work is needed to “help ensure reliable services for years to come.”

The local trunk sewer, a large underground pipe that runs along Cooksville Creek between Burnhamthorpe Road East and south of The Queensway East, is “essential to the health and function of our city,” Damerla noted.

In an online description of the major sanitary sewer system rehabilitation project, Peel Region said it will also be repairing a number of maintenance holes, commonly called manholes.

Project leaders at the region also noted the importance of the undertaking.

“Wastewater is created when water goes down a drain or toilet. This sewer runs through environmentally sensitive areas and parkland and is now reaching the end of its useful life, requiring rehabilitation to maintain a safe and reliable service,” they said.

During all phases of the Lower Cooksville Trunk Sewer project, including and beyond the work to be completed this year and early in 2027, the region said temporary closures may also be required along/within the following trails and parks:

Cooksville Common
Richard Jones Park
Cooksville Park
Queensway Trail
