A short lived bid for freedom by a one-year-old bear named Fitz led to a temporary change of operations at the Wilder Institute’s Calgary Zoo.
In a statement to various media, zoo officials say the grizzly bear managed to escape his enclosure Sunday around 7:30 a.m., which brought about an immediate activation of emergency response measures.
Members of the zoo’s animal care, health and welfare and security teams were called in, and the ambitious animal was immobilized.
The bear was then “safely relocated..to his back-of-house space. There were no injuries to guests, staff, volunteers of animals.”
Zoo officials said the incident took place before the zoo opened to the public, but the area of the operation where the bear lives remained closed while an assessment was carried out prior to it reopening Sunday afternoon.
The zoo says it’s reviewing the case as part of its normal post-incident procedures.
Fitz is a recent addition at the zoo, being added to it’s complement last May along with his brother Turner after losing their mother in an encounter with a human last year.
