The identity of a woman who fell into Lake Ontario at a Mississauga park and later died in hospital has not yet been made public as police try to locate her family.
Peel Regional Police told INsauga.com the woman was “reportedly … swept into the water” at Jack Darling Memorial Park in Mississauga at around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday night.
“Following search-and-rescue efforts,” Mississauga firefighters located the woman some 45 minutes later, at approximately 11:15 p.m., police added.
The woman was rushed to hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later.
“At this time, we have not been able to locate and notify her next of kin,” police said on Monday morning, adding no further details will be released until such a notification has taken place.
Police did not reveal the age of the woman or any other details related to circumstances that may have led to her ending up in the water. It’s also not known if the woman was alone or with any other people prior to the mishap and her fall into the lake.
Covering more than 20 acres, Jack Darling Memorial Park is one of the largest and most popular of the city’s waterfront green spaces. Situated on Lake Ontario a few kilometres west of Port Credit Harbour, where the Credit River empties into the lake, it features numerous amenities that include picnic areas, tennis courts, beach areas, a leash-free zone, a spray pad and two playgrounds.
A section of the popular Waterfront Trail also runs through the park.
