A Mississauga man faces multiple charges in connection with two online child sexual abuse investigations conducted by different police forces.

York Regional Police said on Tuesday that investigators with the police agency’s Internet Child Exploitation unit laid a number of child sexual abuse and exploitation material charges as part of an ongoing investigation.

Police said their probe began in September 2025 when officers started looking into a suspect who was using an online platform to arrange meetings with youths he believed were under the age of 16 for the purpose of committing sexual offences.

“Over the span of seven months, the suspect continued to send messages using numerous aliases including ‘Scanner’, ‘Competentist’, ‘James Thomas’, ‘JP T’ and ‘Confessionator’,” York police said in a news release issued Tuesday.

Investigators in York were then notified in May by Ontario Provincial Police who were investigating “similar allegations involving the same suspect and motive,” police said.

A man was arrested in June in relation to both investigations.

John Thompson, 52, of Mississauga, is charged with:

Making child sexual abuse and exploitation material — two counts.
Luring a person under 16 years by means of telecommunication — three counts.
Making sexually explicit material available to a child under 18.
Possession of child sexual abuse and exploitation material.

Police said they believe there are additional victims.

Anyone with information that could be related to the investigation is asked to call police at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7078, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.

Police urge victims of child exploitation anywhere to report it to local police as well as to cybertip.ca, an online reporting site that allows citizens to report concerns about the online sexual exploitation of children. The information is then loaded to a national database where it can be classified and investigated by the appropriate police service.
