Two Brampton residents are facing firearm-related charges after police were called to a rural property in Dufferin County following reports of gunfire that residents said was being fired in their direction, with some describing bullets whistling overhead.
Dufferin OPP officers were dispatched to a vacant property in the area of Highway 10 in the Township of Melancthon at about 2:52 p.m. on Aug. 9 after receiving numerous calls about the unsafe discharge of multiple firearms.
The Township of Melancthon is in Dufferin County, roughly 70 kilometres northwest of Brampton. The rural township is located north of Orangeville and includes communities such as Shelburne and Horning’s Mills.
When officers arrived, they found five people at the property.
Police then spoke with people who had complained about the gunfire.
According to the OPP, complainants reported hearing numerous gunshots being fired in their direction and described hearing bullets “whistling overhead.”
The investigation resulted in police identifying all of the people involved and seizing four firearms, along with ammunition and two Possession and Acquisition Licences (PALs).
The investigation then led officers to a Brampton residence, where they seized another five firearms, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, numerous magazines and a knife.
Gurcharn Singh, 31, of Brampton, has been charged with careless use of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition and possession of a prohibited device or ammunition.
Sharanjit Kaur, 32, also of Brampton, has been charged with careless use of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition.
The OPP did not say whether the additional firearms seized at the Brampton residence were directly connected to the reported gunfire.
Police are reminding firearm owners that safety must be the top priority when handling or discharging firearms.
The OPP says shooters are responsible for knowing their target, what lies beyond it and ensuring a safe backstop is present. Firearms must only be discharged in a lawful and safe manner that does not put people, property or the public at risk.
Unsafe firearm use can result in criminal charges, the seizure of firearms and the suspension or revocation of firearms licences, police said.
The investigation remains ongoing.
