U.S. President Donald Trump calls off his 50 per cent tariffs on Canada until Friday as both sides finalize the terms of a trade deal. We speak to one of Trump’s former trade advisers about what could be in the president’s endgame.
Kelly Ann Shaw, a former Trump administration trade advisor, told CBC’s Power & Politics that she is expecting an “interim deal” or a basket of concessions between the U.S. and Canada, which would bring Canada back into the fold with CUSMA review negotiations.
“I don’t think it will fix every issue we have between us, but I do think that it will go a long way in addressing the Canadian retaliation and some of the most pressing issues that the president really cares about,” Shaw said, noting that other trade concerns should be tackled on a trilateral basis.
Shaw said she is paying particular attention to the impact on aluminum, steel and automotives.
“These are things that the president has very rarely given in on and they are the number one ask of Canada,” Shaw said, noting that this may be the litmus test for how the U.S.-Canada relationship will unfold over the next year.
