Former undefeated junior middleweight contender Prichard Colon, 11 years after his last fight, has succumbed to his serious brain injuries.
The proud Puerto Rican/Floridian was 16-0 with 13 KOs when he entered the ring in 2015 against fellow undefeated Terrell Williams. Poor refereeing by Joseph Cooper and numerous (dangerous) rabbit punches from Williams were something Colon complained about during the fight.
After the bout, Colon collapsed in the dressing room. Rushed to the hospital, doctors diagnosed that he had suffered bleeding in his brain, and he underwent emergency surgery.
Colon was left with severe neurological effects and fell into a coma for 221 days. His career ended that night, but his biggest fight had just begun.
Colon underwent years of therapy but never regained speech or mobility and needed full-time care.
In 2021, he had another major brain surgery but never fully recovered.
Colon’s family took to social media, thanking people for prayers over the years and taking some solace in the fact he was “in a better place”.
He was only 33 years old.
