Montreal police say a person was seriously injured in a police shooting late Wednesday afternoon after a wellness check turned violent.
According to a spokesperson for the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM), officers went to an apartment on 14th Avenue near Émile-Journault Street in the Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension borough to check on the well-being of people inside and ensure their safety.
During the intervention, police opened fire, seriously injuring a person. The SPVM provided few details about the circumstances of the shooting or the person shot.
An officer also sustained non-life-threatening injuries, possibly from a sharp object, the spokesperson said.
A perimeter has been established around the scene, and the investigation has been taken over by the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI), Quebec’s police watchdog.
