Traffic will be impacted for the next month on several busy roads in southwest Mississauga as new sanitary sewers are installed in the area.

Peel Region officials said this week traffic on Southdown Road, Royal Windsor Drive and Avonhead Road will be affected as the work progresses.

“Peel Region has been installing new sanitary sewers along Southdown Road and Royal Windsor Drive. Local impacts along Avonhead Road are also planned to facilitate abandonment of existing sewers,” regional officials said in an online update on Thursday. “This work is required to keep providing (the area) with high-quality wastewater services.”

Project leaders said alternate traffic setups will be introduced over the next month or so “as we open up lanes to ease traffic along Royal Windsor Drive and Southdown Road.

“Intermittent traffic impacts will still be required to facilitate remaining work, including sewer connections at several intersections.”

Those intersections include:

Royal Windsor Drive eastbound lanes at Hensley Street.
Royal Windsor Drive eastbound right-turn lane to Southdown Road.

The intersection at Royal Windsor Drive and Avonhead Road remains closed due to remaining excavation and connection work, the region noted. Abandonment of existing sewers is planned along Royal Windsor Drive and Avonhead Road.

Due to this work, motorists may see intermittent lane closures along:

Royal Windsor Drive from Avonhead Road to Hensley Street.
Avonhead Road from Royal Windsor Drive to 450 metres south of Royal Windsor Drive.

“Sanitary sewers are underground pipes that carry wastewater from your home or business to a water resource recovery facility,” officials explained in an online description of the major infrastructure project. “Wastewater is created when water goes down a drain or toilet. As our population grows, we need to build larger sewers to provide (residents and businesses) with high-quality wastewater services.”

The work will take place Mondays through Fridays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Restoration work involving sod, sidewalks and paving will follow the main work, project leaders said.

Construction is expexted to finish in the fall.

“We understand construction can be disruptive, and we appreciate your patience as we work to improve our community’s infrastructure,” project leaders said in their update to residents, motorists and businesses. “This work both maintains and improves Peel’s world-class water systems, allowing us to provide reliable wastewater services to support a thriving community for life.”
