EDMONTON – Vincent Blanchard kicked the winning field goal as time expired as the Edmonton Elks rallied to defeat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers by a score of 22-19 in CFL Week 12 action at Play Alberta Field at Commonwealth Stadium on Friday (Aug. 21) night.

Cody Fajardo and Austin Mack each scored a touchdown for the Elks, who stormed back after falling behind 16-0 during the first half.

Blanchard made all three of his field goals, including the game-winner from 40 yards out. The Quebec City native also hit a walk-off field goal to lift Edmonton past the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Regina on July 23.

“It’s a good feeling just to do your job,” said Blanchard. “Everybody has a job and my job is to put the ball (between) the posts, and I’m just happy to do my job.”

Fajardo completed 20 of 32 passes for 249 yards. Justin Rankin led Edmonton with 93 yards rushing, while TJ Luther was the Elks’ top pass-catcher with seven receptions for 85 yards.

The Blue Bombers got their lone touchdown from receiver Tim While, while Winnipeg kicker Sergio Castillo made four field goals.

Both teams played with tremendous discipline. Edmonton was assessed 0 penalties, while Winnipeg was flagged twice for 56 yards.

The game was a tale of two halves. Winnipeg controlled the opening two quarters, out-gaining the Elks 290-130 in net offence while holding the ball for 22:53 of the opening 30 minutes. The second half saw Edmonton out-gain the visitors 252-29 in net offence, with 21:54 time of possession.

“I felt like (in) the first half, we weren’t all there, just mentally, we weren’t there, and then at halftime there was some words said in that locker room and guys came out fired up,” said Fajardo. “It just shows the championship mentality that we have … we find a way to find a way. It’s not always pretty but they don’t ask you ‘how’, they ask you ‘how many’ at the end of the year.”

Winnipeg opened the scoring on a 15-yard field goal from Castillo midway through the first quarter. The Blue Bombers extended their lead to 10-0 early in the second quarter, as White hauled in a 30-yard touchdown pass from Zach Collaros. Two more field goals from Castillo put his team in front 16-0.

Edmonton finally got on the board with just 1:31 remaining in the second quarter, when Cody Fajardo passed to Mack for a 15-yard touchdown. The Elks came up short on their ensuing two-point convert attempt, leaving the score 16-6 in favour of Winnipeg going into the half.

The Elks trimmed Winnipeg’s lead to 16-9 as Blanchard knocked home a 42-yard field goal on the first possession of the second half. Edmonton then drew even after Fajardo scored a two-yard touchdown rush late in the third quarter.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Edmonton took its first lead of the game, 19-16, thanks to a 34-yard field goal from Blanchard, before Castillo drilled his fourth field goal of the game, from 53 yards, with 1:45 remaining to even the score. Edmonton got the ball back and drove into Winnipeg territory, setting the stage for Blanchard’s heroics.

“This is the concrete castle of the North,” said Elks head coach Mark Kilam, whose team is now 4-1 at home this season and has won 9 of its last 11 games at Commonwealth Stadium. “That’s what we think, and we defend it as such.”

With the victory, Edmonton improves its record to 8-3 and continues to sit atop the CFL West Division standings. Winnipeg remains third in the division with a record of 5-5.

The Elks will now have a bye in Week 13, before returning returning to action when they visit the Calgary Stampeders at McMahon Stadium on Sept. 7 (4 p.m. MT).

Edmonton’s next home game is Sept. 12 against the Stampeders at Play Alberta Field at Commonwealth Stadium (5 p.m. MT). Tickets are available now.
