An ongoing Brampton double-homicide investigation that began with a deadly shooting in April has resulted in the arrests of five people, including three adults and two youths.
Peel Regional Police announced Monday that investigators with the Homicide Bureau have arrested and charged the five suspects in connection with the deaths of two people.
The investigation began on April 3, when officers were called to a shooting at approximately 10:21 p.m. on the grounds of a school near Rutherford Road and Kennedy Road.
Police found an adult male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. A short distance away, near Weybridge Trail, officers found a male youth who had also been shot.
Despite lifesaving efforts, both victims died.
Following an extensive investigation, police say five people were arrested and charged between May and July.
Among those arrested is Jahnoi Bell, 21, of Brampton, who is charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
A 17-year-old Brampton youth is also charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
A second 17-year-old Brampton youth faces two counts of first-degree murder, along with charges of unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a loaded restricted firearm, knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm, careless storage of a firearm, possession of a prohibited device, possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order and possession of a firearm with an altered serial number.
The two youths cannot be identified because of protections under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Police have also charged Mcaium Aarons, 25, of Toronto, with conspiracy to commit an indictable offence and breach of a probation order.
Jayden Christmah, 23, of Orangeville, is charged with possession of a firearm for the purpose of trafficking.
All five suspects were held in custody pending bail hearings before the Ontario Court of Justice.
As part of the investigation, police recovered two firearms. One was found at the homicide scene, while the other was seized following the execution of a search warrant at a Brampton residence.
Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah said the arrests represent an important development in the lengthy investigation.
“Two lives were cut short by gun violence, leaving families and a community to grieve,” Duraiappah said. “This investigation has been relentless, and these arrests are an important step toward holding those responsible accountable.”
Police say investigators will continue to pursue information as the case moves through the courts.
