We have a new development out of Columbus.
A trade scenario along those lines has never looked more plausible, and the reason is simple.
Goaltender Elvis Merzlikins has just undergone shoulder surgery, and he will be out long term, with no timetable for his return.
Columbus is lacking depth in goal.
Behind starter Jet Greaves, the next goaltender on the depth chart, Pheonix Copley, was signed for the American Hockey League.
The team’s announcement could open the door:
“Goaltender Elvis Merzlikins underwent successful shoulder surgery on Monday. No timetable has been set for his return at this time.”

Samuel Montembeault emerges as a logical Blue Jackets trade target for Montreal
This is where the Montreal Canadiens could come into the picture.
Montembeault, who clearly appears to be the odd man out in Montreal as the third goaltender, has put together some good seasons and helped lead the club to the playoffs in 2024-25.
But last season was much more difficult for him.
The two front offices know each other well.
Don Waddell and Kent Hughes already completed the Patrik Laine trade and the Luke Tuch deal, and they have reportedly been discussing Kirill Marchenko for some time.
For Montreal, the timing makes sense.
Now pushed down to third on the depth chart, Montembeault no longer really has a place here, and the clock is ticking to make a move.
This is the kind of trade that could work for both sides… while also keeping the line of communication open between Hughes and Waddell.
