Despite a report early Friday that the Whitecaps and the provincial government had a deal in place to let the club “run B.C. Place for the next five years,” it has been reported that this is “not the case — at least, not yet.” Following Friday’s episode of the “Away From The Numbers” podcast, the Whitecaps released a statement that said that “no ‘new or different agreement’ had been reached, but acknowledged that talks continue.” The show’s host Michael McColl during the episode said that he had “heard from three people that a deal was done, but also said he’d not been able to confirm it with the team.” It was reported that there had “been a recent lull in talks between the parties” (Vancouver PROVINCE, 8/21).
After four games, the Whitecaps “remain unimpressed” with the artificial surface at B.C. Place that was installed following the 2026 World Cup. PavCo spokesperson Jenny McKenzie said that the surface “still needs a settling-in period.” Normally there “would have been more time following installation” before the Whitecaps and the CFL’s B.C. Lions began playing games (Vancouver PROVINCE, 8/21).
