One of Mississauga’s highest-priority infrastructure projects, a pedestrian and cycling bridge that’ll span the Credit River, is being completed as part of a cost-sharing venture between the city and federal government.

When it opens this fall, the new 66-metre active transportation bridge will cross the river between Port Credit Memorial Park and the Port Credit Royal Canadian Legion just north of Lakeshore Road.

What Mississauga Ward 1 Coun. Stephen Dasko has described as a “signature bridge” is expected to make getting around the south end of Canada’s seventh-largest city much easier for people once it opens.

“Designed exclusively for pedestrians and cyclists, the bridge will provide a safe, accessible crossing separated from vehicle traffic, linking Port Credit and the GO station with the Mineola West neighbourhood,” City of Mississauga officials said in a news release over the weekend announcing that some $8.7 million in federal funding will help the city complete the pedestrian/cycling bridge project in addition to major upgrades to the Culham Trail.

The bridge project, the city continued, supports Mississauga’s efforts to “enhance transportation options and strengthen connections along the waterfront.”

Dasko added the bridge has, for years, been part “of the vision for a more connected Port Credit. Once complete, it will provide a safe and convenient link across the Credit River, connecting residents to the GO station, waterfront and local destinations while supporting active transportation in one of Mississauga’s most walkable communities.”

Mississauga-Erin Mills MP Iqra Khalid noted that as the city’s population continues to grow, “the future of transportation in Mississauga will include more walking, cycling, running, skating and rolling.”

Initially expected to open in the spring of 2027, the new pedestrian/cyclist bridge will now open to the public this fall, Dasko said recently.

Construction began last October, and City of Mississauga officials initially said it would take 18 months from that point to complete the bridge.

Dasko said earlier the new active transportation bridge, which has been “a long time coming,” will “transform how we move through our community.”

Furthermore, city officials pointed out last fall, the bridge will “connect trails in the Lakeshore Road corridor … and offer a direct and easy way to walk, cycle or skate to Memorial Park and the GO station and reduce demand for parking at these locations. This will free up parking for those travelling by car to the GO station.”

The bridge is being assembled in a fenced-off area near both the Royal Canadian Legion’s parking lot and Memorial Park, project leaders said earlier, adding “once assembled, the bridge will be launched over the Credit River.”

The 66-metre bridge is one part of a broader City of Mississauga plan for the entire Lakeshore Road corridor.

The city’s Lakeshore Transportation Studies plan includes a series of interconnected infrastructure projects along Lakeshore Road, including a bus rapid transit route in east Mississauga and the pedestrian/cyclist bridge across the Credit River.

It also includes a “Lakeshore Complete Street” initiative that looks at options to improve the experience for people travelling along Lakeshore Road and Royal Windsor Drive from East Avenue (Lakeview area of Mississauga) to the Oakville border.  

City officials said earlier the huge endeavour will create stronger connections and support reliable transit across the city.
