Cancer patients in Brampton will continue to have access to free community-based support during treatment and recovery after William Osler Health System and Wellspring Cancer Support Chinguacousy renewed their partnership.
The organizations have renewed a Memorandum of Understanding that connects patients receiving cancer treatment through Osler’s Oncology Program with Wellspring’s programs and services in the community.
The partnership is intended to provide support beyond the medical treatment patients receive in hospital, with Wellspring offering programs for patients, caregivers and families throughout their cancer journey.
Wellspring provides group and peer support, exercise and wellness programs, educational resources and practical and emotional support. All of its programs are free and do not require a physician referral.
“A cancer diagnosis affects more than a person’s physical health,” said Patricia Mosnia, clinical director of Oncology, Palliative Care and Benign Hematology at Osler. “At Osler, we are committed to providing people-centred care that supports every aspect of a patient’s well-being.”
The renewed agreement will see Osler and Wellspring continue to promote the community-based programs to patients and families, while providing ongoing education to Osler’s oncology teams about the services available.
The organizations will also explore additional ways to connect patients and their families with Wellspring services during cancer treatment and recovery.
“Renewing our collaboration with Wellspring ensures Osler patients and families have access to trusted community-based supports, now and well into the future,” said Carole Moore, vice president of Clinical Services at Osler.
Wellspring Chinguacousy serves people living with cancer, caregivers and families across Brampton, Peel Region and surrounding communities.
Rebecca Harrison, executive director of the Wellspring Chinguacousy Foundation, said the renewed partnership is intended to make it easier for patients and families to find practical support while they undergo treatment and recover.
The organization relies entirely on donations and sponsorship to operate its programs and receives no core government funding.
Osler serves about 1.3 million people in Brampton, North Etobicoke, Caledon and surrounding communities. Its Brampton facilities include Brampton Civic Hospital and Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness, which is being transformed into Brampton’s second hospital.
The renewed collaboration means patients receiving cancer care through Osler can continue to access Wellspring’s free programs as an additional source of support throughout their cancer journey.
