Maple Ridge RCMP investigating spray painting in provincial park

Maple Ridge RCMP is investigating a report of mischief, after getting a complaint about spray painting in the natural environment of Golden Ears Provincial Park.
According to witnesses, the painting may have been intended as a memorial for a man who drowned in Gold Creek on Aug. 3. His fall in the water at the Lower Falls area was witnessed by family and friends, but they were not able to save him.
A social media video of the painted rocks shows a message with a date of Aug. 4 – one day after the man’s death.
On Aug. 17, police received “a report from the public about graffiti made by an unknown male,” and say they are working with BC Parks staff to identify the persons involved, and are aware of photos and videos circulating online.
“Maple Ridge RCMP acknowledges that while this incident appears to be an attempt at memorializing a drowning victim in the area, vandalism within a protected area is still considered a criminal offence,” said a police press release on Aug. 25.
“Such acts can harm the environment, diminish the experience of other park users, and create unnecessary cleanup cost for the community. We extend our sympathies to the family and the friends of the man who drowned and encourage those wishing to pay respects to do so through appropriate, legal means.”
Maple Ridge Fire & Rescue has warned the public to obey posted signs at the park, stay behind fences or barriers, and not swim in the pools above or near the falls. Once beyond the barriers, people can encounter slippery rocks and unsure footing, and it is dangerous even for those who are good swimmers.
