One member of Brampton City Council has withdrawn for the upcoming election and another sitting councillor looks to take over his seat, while yet another candidate has been added due to a court order.

The City of Brampton released its updated list of candidates for mayor and city council seats on Tuesday, and shows a few changes from the round-up by INsauga.com on deadline day.

The biggest shake-up is that longtime Wards 7 and 8 Regional Coun. Pat Fortini has withdrawn his candidacy in Brampton and is instead running for a seat on Caledon Town Council in Ward 4.

Fortini was first elected to Brampton City Council in 2014 and was re-elected in 2018 and again in 2022. He was one of the first Brampton councillors to sign up for the upcoming 2026 election, and had a career in the construction industry before entering politics.

He was the member of council who brought forward the Peel Memorial Centre tax levy, and part of a bloc of councillors who sparred with Mayor Patrick Brown and skipped meetings over what they called “authoritarian” conditions.

Fortini withdrew his candidacy on the last day of the deadline. The seat he leaves behind as he seeks his first term in Caledon has six contenders – local dentist Aman Sharma, Anil Sahajpal, Vedaant Vyas, Cynthia Sri Pragdash, Christopher Soranno, and Fortini’s soon-to-be-former council colleague and ward partner, Coun. Rod Power.

Power is currently the city councillor for Wards 7 and 8, but switched to the regional race after Fortini backed out. If elected in the October race, this will be Power’s second term on council.

He has recently been a prominent voice on council opposing multiple bike lane projects, and he successfully introduced a motion to remove the protected bike lanes and curbing on Howden Boulevard in favour of shared “sharrows” and a multi-use path to curb traffic congestion.

Power also put forward a unanimously-approved motion in council calling for Brampton to participate in legal and regulatory hearings concerning the Stellantis Automotive Plant and decisions that could impact thousands of local jobs.

The final significant change to Brampton’s list of candidates came through a court order issued on Monday,with former Conservative Party of Canada candidate Taran Chahal entering the race for Power’s Ward 7 and 8 city councillor spot.

Chahal ran for the Conservatives as a candidate in Brampton Centre during the 2025 federal election. He received 46.9 per cent of the vote but lost to the Liberals’ Amandeep Sodhi, who won with 48.4 per cent of the ballots.

He worked in finance before entering the 2025 federal election, and is now employed by the City of Brampton as a manager of capital assets, according to his Linkedin profile.

Adding Chahal to the list of candidates comes following an Aug. 24 order of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, and he has “been certified as a candidate for City Councillor for Wards 7 and 8 in the 2026 City of Brampton Municipal Election,” the city’s election website reads.

Details of the court order were not immediately available.
