A Mississauga man is facing drug trafficking and firearms charges after police say he was arrested while entering Greater Sudbury with approximately $50,000 worth of cocaine and a loaded handgun.

Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS) arrested 36-year-old Kmar Kelly on Aug. 23 following an investigation by the force’s Drug Enforcement Unit.

Police say detectives, assisted by the Emergency Response Unit and Community Response Unit, arrested the man as he entered Greater Sudbury.

Investigators then executed a search warrant at a downtown residence associated with the accused.

The search turned up approximately 500 grams of cocaine, a loaded Ruger semi-automatic handgun, four cell phones and $3,000 in Canadian cash, according to police.

The cocaine has an estimated street value of approximately $50,000.

Police also seized another $500 in cash, digital scales, packaging materials and cutting agents during the search of the downtown residence.

Kelly, who is from Mississauga, has been charged under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and the Criminal Code with possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, and possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition.

He appeared in bail court on Aug. 24 to answer to the charges.

The investigation was conducted in collaboration with the Ontario Provincial Police-led Provincial Guns and Gangs Enforcement Team.
