The third annual Dog Days of Summer — a campaign by the Greater Edmonton Animal Rescue Society — is underway, with the goal of having exposure, getting donations, volunteers, and a chance to find a new home for these furry friends.
“We have people come; they come off the plane, or they’re working at the airport, or they’re picking up someone, they see the animals, and they fall in love, and then they fill out an application to foster or adopt, and then they end up going home with them when they’re ready,” said Karla Alsop, the president of Gears and the foster director.
Since partnering with the airport two years ago, at least 12 pets have found a new home.
“You really see a massive difference when people interact with our pet therapy team. YEG was the first Canadian airport to bring on a team of its kind, and we’ve seen other airports follow suit because we do see the results. People almost melt when they see a little puppy or if they’re a bit stressed while they’re traveling,” said Erin Isfeld, a spokesperson for the Edmonton International Airport.
It’s not just dogs; cats are also up for adoption.
