CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos men’s soccer team opened its season with a 2-0 win over the Mount Royal University Cougars in from of 1,787 fans on Thursday at McMahon Stadium.
The Dinos improved to 1-0-0 to open the year, while defending Canada West champion Mount Royal fell to 0-1-0. The first half started quietly before Jacob Hunter broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute with a highlight-reel bicycle kick goal. Calgary carried a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Calgary doubled its lead in the 63rd minute when Luis Rangel-Kataev, just moments after entering as a substitute, converted a feed from Hunter for his own first goal of the year. William Omoreniye had a chance to make it 3-0 from the penalty spot in the 69th minute but sent his attempt wide.
Calgary goalkeeper Hany Shafie made five saves to preserve the clean sheet.
Reflecting on his first goal as a Dino, Rangel-Kataev said the nerves gave way to excitement the moment he stepped on the pitch.
“As soon as I stepped on the pitch, all the nerves went away, and I was just so excited to finish with that goal. That was very emotional for me.”
The win opened head coach Ramon Mifflin‘s third season with the Dinos.
“It was an amazing battle,” said Mifflin.
With a roster built around so much young talent, Mifflin said his message to the group is simple.
“Fight, have fun, have joy, have personality, have presence, and good things will happen.”
The Dinos will return to action Saturday, Sept. 5, at 2:15 p.m. when they travel to face the Alberta Golden Bears in Edmonton. The game can be seen live on Canada West TV powered by BioSteel.
Mount Royal will travel to face the MacEwan Griffins on Saturday, Sept. 5, at 2:30 p.m.
